What the work actually involves
This is field sales to building firms: small and medium contractors, mostly owner-run. You find them, you show them the software, you help them get started, and you look after them so they stay. There is no call centre, no script and nobody listening in.
Who you are selling to
Building firms with somewhere between two and fifty people. The person you need is usually the owner, and they are usually on site rather than at a desk, so this works better in person than on the phone.
They are not buying software because they enjoy software. They are buying it because quoting takes their evenings, because a job lost money and they only found out afterwards, or because a main contractor has started asking for RAMS and certificates they cannot produce quickly.
What a week looks like
There is no set week, because you decide it. The shape that fits this trade is mornings on sites and at trade counters, when the owner is about, and afternoons following up and demonstrating.
We give you leads for your area, built from Companies House records and local business listings, and you can work your own contacts as well. A lead is yours while you are actively working it.
A demonstration is around forty minutes. Most sales take two or three conversations rather than one, and the gap between first contact and signing is usually a few weeks rather than months.
What happens after someone signs
You help them get set up, because a customer who never really started will leave, and you are paid for as long as they stay. That is the part most commission-only sales roles do not have: your interest and the customer’s are the same one.
You are not their support desk. We handle technical questions and training. What you do is keep in touch, notice when something is wrong and tell us.
What you need
A car, a phone, a laptop or tablet, and the willingness to knock on doors. No construction background is required and no software background is required, and because the programme is new there is no type here to match yourself against.
You need your own UTR, because you are self-employed and invoicing is handled by self-billing under the agreement you sign. If you are VAT registered you charge VAT; if you are not, you do not.
You sign the partner agreement digitally and add your bank details through Stripe, which verifies your identity so that payouts can flow. Both are done in the portal after approval.
Questions people ask
- Is this door-to-door sales?
- Partly. Visiting sites, trade counters and small builders’ yards in person is the thing that works best with this audience. It is business-to-business, not residential, and you are not cold calling from a list in a room.
- Do I need to know about construction?
- No. It helps to be comfortable talking to trades, but the product knowledge is taught during accreditation and we support every demonstration you want help with.
- How many hours would I need to do?
- There is no minimum and nobody sets you targets or asks where you are. Be realistic about the arithmetic: recurring commission takes the better part of a year to become an income, so plan for the build-up rather than for the first month.
